Aircraft stripper - I think that I have seen it at Pep Boys. Your local auto paint supplier will likely stock it. Airplanes and custom autos are really the applications for a quality paint remover. I will note that I am told that not all brands of stripper are effective with all types of paint. I think that I read that Sherwin-Williams might actually make a really good stripper that attacks polyurethane effectively. The paint stripper that you find in Home Depot and Lowes is really targetted at furniture refinishers and applications like metal house trim items.
If you are removing the paint from an entire airplane, be aware of the environmental concerns. I understand that there are now paint removers that are environmentally friendly, but I do not have experience with them. What you do not want is to have your hangar designated a sire requiring formal environmental cleanup. Actually the strippers found in retail stores are not ideal for large projects like this.
PPG has a product called Eldorado PR , and there are many others, but I can't find anyone who will sell them to an individual - so far. If you cover your shop floor with plastic sheet, the stripper will drip down onto it and make a huge mess when it melts the plastic. Just use aluminum foil. If you cover the stripper with plastic drop cloths, it will melt the plastic into a gooey mess. A broom will not scrub the softened paint off. Use a plastic bondo spreader, or a small piece of aluminum sheet. You CAN use a steel wide blade putty knife. At one point you mention what Dupont recommends for priming.
Later you mention Sherwin Williams. What works for one brand may not work for another. If you have hail dents, fill them with body filler and after sanding it smooth, THEN put sandable primer over it. Don't but body filler on top of primer. You mention that the color stripes are added when the paint has cured for a certain time. After that paint is dry, you mask it off and shoot the rest of the plane.
Then when you remove the masking over the stripe color and there is your stripe. You also mention removing tapes as soon as possible while the paint is still soft. This will lead to a very ragged edge.
It is best to let the paint dry thoroughly before removing the tape. About 24 hours is usually a good time. Spend the money for 3M "Fine Line" tape. Before you spend many hundreds of dollars on stripper and make a big mess, get some or grit "wet or dry" sand paper. Fill a bucket with water and see how quickly you can water sand a one foot square down to the aluminum.
Don't sand over rivets unless they are counter sunk. Notice how long it takes you to do a one foot square. Then use stripper to do a one foot square.
Include in the time for the stripper the amount of time you spend cleaning the shop floor and power washing the stripper out of the seams on your plane.

It looks like commercial shop practice is to not sand aluminum skin and since it's pretty thin to start with that may be why. Stripe painting before or after is probably a personal call.

Regardless of their purpose, these coatings require replacement from time to time—sometimes frequently, but usually every 5—8 years. The current dominant method of depainting for both military and commercial aircraft is chemical removal, which brings with it a variety of undesirable characteristics.

It is no surprise that alternatives to these depainting methods have been sought for many years. In the late s, a flurry of USAF-sponsored work was carried out in search of the right laser and the right deployment means to address this challenge.
Now, three decades and many, many millions of research dollars later, laser paint stripping is finally emerging as a credible solution to replace the hazardous, environmentally unfriendly, chemical, and mechanical paint stripping methods that dominate aircraft depainting today. And, surprisingly, the boldest new initiative in laser paint stripping is being spearheaded by private industry. To prevent thermal damage to the aircraft surface, the laser energy must be delivered rapidly and briefly, either by pulsing the laser beam or by sweeping a continuous laser beam across the painted surface.
In either case, the top layer of paint is heated and then vaporizes, followed by immediate combustion as it leaves the surface and encounters oxygen in the air. The heat of combustion in laser paint stripping can be many times higher than the laser energy deposited to the surface, and efficient removal of this heated effluent is essential for process efficiency and workplace safety. All paints do not absorb laser energy the same way, and all laser wavelengths are not absorbed the same way by paints.
This process can be very efficient. This ability of CO 2 laser paint stripping becomes additionally important if removal of primer is required—a function that is quite difficult for the shorter wavelength to accomplish. This metric along with actual laser power is extremely important in understanding productivity, thermal loading on the aircraft, and overall process cost.
There are several major elements in delivering a laser paint stripping beam to the work surface. The first requirement is that the beam be delivered from a ground location to a scanner, which is located at the end of a robot capable of reaching the heights of a full-scale aircraft. However, given that the majority of aircraft surfaces are colors other than gray, it is obvious that a color-independent process should be adopted.
This latter consideration presents an obvious dilemma since it has just been shown that fiber-delivered laser power is far less efficient on light colors. And, at least for now, the new Q -switched, fiber-delivered lasers are not nearly as powerful as commercially available CO 2 lasers, and cannot be delivered via long fibers.
