For Americans, Digimon is largely remembered as a series of cartoons that aired nationally on Fox Kids from Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth changed all that. I have always been a die-hard PC gamer, the kind of person who plays PC-centric genres like shooters, RPGs, and strategy games, but in early , I heard there was a new, story-driven Digimon game coming out for the PS4 and Vita, and I knew I had to check it out.
And the character designs looked terrible, but hey, it was a new Digimon game. You start at the detective agency, pick up mysteries to solve, then jump between EDEN and Tokyo, putting the pieces together, befriending new digimon, and ultimately saving the world. Beloved rivals like Blue and Silver have been replaced with milquetoasts who are mediocre at best and annoying at worst. I really enjoyed helping out the paranormal school club, discovering a mysterious missing floor of Nakano Broadway, and rescuing a doctor in a cursed hospital, among other quests.
What an adventure it is! Unlike the cartoons, which take place largely within the digital world, a big chunk of Cyber Sleuth takes place in Tokyo.
Ever visit Whiterun in Skyrim? Cyber Sleuth is different. It is realistically sized but only in small, bite-sized chunks that represent each area.
These spaces feel believable because they feel real, even though the maps are so small. Throughout your journey as a detective and monster trainer, you might find yourself visiting Shinjuku or Akihabara or walking through the Nakano Broadway to drop by Mandarake.
Cyber Sleuth conveys a sense of authenticity by jam-packing every square inch of every single map with as much detail as it can. In the anime, digimon could both digivolve and de-digivolve, transforming back into their smaller selves, because it would be pretty hard to carry on a episode anime when Agumon grows to the size of a T-Rex by Episode 2. Cyber Sleuth takes this idea and runs with it. For my starter, I picked Palmon.
I leveled her up a ways, digivolved her into a Togemon, then de-digivolved her into a Renamon, before evolving her once again into Kyuubimon, then Taomon, and finally, Sakuyamon.
Once you get a digimon to be the species you want, you still have ways of increasing its overall power. How do you achieve that? Cyber Sleuth released with some DLC that includes some of the toughest fights in the game, the kind of fights you need to build very specific parties to beat. So I de-digivolved some of them, digivolved them into very specific digimon, raised those digimon to a certain power level, which allowed them to learn new moves, then de-digivolved them until I could re-digivolve them back into the digimon I wanted.
See how nearly all her skills are inherited? For some people, this may sound tedious; but I find it way better than, say, grinding my ideal team up to take on the Elite 4 in Kanto.
It just feels really rewarding for players who want to. Cyber Sleuth is perfect for the Switch. Grinding out the perfect digimon can take a lot of time, but on the default difficulty, the games are easy enough that you can autobattle your way through the grind while watching TV or reading books, like I did. Digimon game review. Digimon Masters Online Overview
It rarely pays off to play the bonus game, though, as there is only so much training your Digimon can partake in before exhaustion occurs. As in life, arguably, the longer, steadier road eventually yields the largest payoff. In the end, proper training and discipline mold your Digimon into a powerful, effective fighting machine - one with a higher chance of evolving into a favorable form. Fights with other Digimon are quite frequent, provided you venture outside of File City's sheltering environments, which you'll be doing fairly frequently if you actually want to complete the game's minimalistic quest.
Fights are instigated by colliding with your potential prey on the field. Once in combat, things are largely out of your hands - given a paltry two options "your call," which causes the monster to attack on its own volition and retreat , you're forced to simply watch battles unfold, only occasionally throwing an item in edgewise or resuscitating a downed creature.
To be fair, you do get to activate a creature's special attack after a given number of rounds have passed marked by the word "finish" spelling itself out, over the interface, letter by letter , though this barely provides the amount of control you'll doubtlessly crave. Victory in combat brings with it the expected increase in attributes, but the odd, disconnected feeling you get from Digimon World's combat system barely feels rewarding. Despite its disassociating play focus, no one can deny that Digimon World is a nice-looking game.
The prerendered backgrounds look smooth and alive, if only a little static, and the character models are nicely detailed, if a bit stiffly animated. The environments and sets are cleverly designed, and the camera perspectives do much to imbue the game with a sense of spatial variety. Digimon World's audio production, though, feels a bit bare - though some of the vocal effects come off as remarkably cute praise your Digimon, and you'll know what I mean.
Music is relatively sparse, and the sound effects are very basic, rarely adding anything to the entire package. Whether Tamagotchi raising truly deserves to be considered classical is totally up for debate, but in the context of monster raising and the gameplay conventions it has spawned, the term can be used with little or no worries. Needless to say, Digimon World isn't for everyone - only dedicated Digimon fans or fans of the monster-raising genre need apply.
